Juan Mata targets more silverware in second season at Chelsea
Juan Mata is hopeful Chelsea can challenge for trophies next season after his return to training this week
Juan Mata signed for Chelsea from Valencia last August
The Blues fell out of contention for the English title mid-way though
the last campaign under André Villas-Boas, before Roberto Di Matteo was
able to lead the Londoners to an FA Cup and Champions League double.
Mata, who was one of Chelsea’s stand-out performers after joining
from Valencia last summer, says the Blues are desperate for more
silverware as they look to become the first team to retain the Champions
League title.
“I think it will be a good season for us,” Mata told Chelsea TV. “Personally, I will try to play more games than last season.
“For sure, our desire is to win another trophy, either the Premier
League or Champions League. These competitions are very important for us
and we will try to do our best.
“We have Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Oscar. We’ve bought some quality players which is good for the team.”
Looking ahead to the new campaign, Mata added: “I feel really good
and confident for the new season. Myself and Oriol [Romeu] have been
looking forward to coming back and I’m happy to be here.
“The Euros were the best moment of the summer for me. Another
European Championship for Spain, I had the opportunity to play in the
final, I scored the last goal and it was amazing.
“The Olympics was a good experience as a sportsman, but we were so
unlucky. We deserved more but we didn’t score so it was impossible to go
through.”
Chelsea take on Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield at Villa Park on Sunday.
